THE FEARLESS

As a girl in 1940s Zaria, Hajaratu refuses to watch quietly while older boys bully younger girls, and that same defiant courage later fuels her resistance to being forced into child marriage. Pushed into abusive unions, abandoned while pregnant, and ignored by male relatives, she turns her anger into activism. Inspired by Aminu Kano, she joins the radical NEPU party as Gambo Sawaba, speaking publicly against early marriage and women’s political exclusion. Repeated arrests, floggings, and attacks, including head-shaving by vigilantes, could not silence her Her life becomes a fierce testament that one woman’s voice can help shift what an entire region believes is possible for its girls.
